ASTM B 117 : Standard Practice for Operating Salt Spray (Fog) Apparatus



This practice describes the apparatus, procedure, and conditions required to create and maintain the salt spray (fog) test environment. Suitable apparatus wich may be used is described in Appendix X1. This practice does not prescribe the type of test specimen or exposure periods to be used for a specific product, nor the interpretation to be given to the results.
The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. The inch-pound units in parentheses are provided for information and may be approximate.
Use a 5% salt solution at 92-97 degrees F in a sealed weather cabinet. Scribe X in steel zinc phosphated test panel to bare metal. Inspect every 24 hours. End test and total hours after 1/4" creepage from scribed area. Creepage shall not exceed 1/4" in either direction from scribe line after 500 hours exposure.
